Surviving to Thriving

A decade ago, when the Drew Lewis Foundation began this journey to support families in moving from merely surviving to truly thriving, the vision was simple but profound: to lift people from a place of struggle to one of empowerment and integrity. It’s a personal mission for me as the CEO because I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the transformation of over 1,000 lives—that number represents not just individuals but whole families. This is about breaking cycles of poverty and hopelessness, and planting seeds of resilience, community, and purpose.

I remember the early days, speaking to RISE members who were working multiple jobs to make ends meet but still barely getting by. They came to us exhausted, anxious, and often feeling alone. Parents, eager to support their families, but unable to get ahead due to lack of opportunity or education, were losing hope. Kids were shouldering adult-sized burdens, missing out on the innocence of childhood. These stories fueled our desire to create a holistic approach that didn’t just offer temporary relief, but a roadmap for lasting change with a community to support the long-term steps and habits to thrive.

The work is deeply personal because every family has a unique story; these aren’t just names on a weekly RISE class roster—they’re individuals with hopes, dreams, and incredible potential. Each story reminds me of why I started the Drew Lewis Foundation: to give families the tools, skills, and confidence to move beyond survival. We designed our program to meet them where they are, focusing on housing, employment, education, and financial literacy. But it’s not just about programs; it’s about people and compassion.

As a leader, I believe that empowering others requires trust, respect, and genuine care. When we see parents complete a financial literacy workshop and pay off their debts or earn a certificate that helps them secure a higher-paying job, there’s a palpable shift. They’re not only gaining skills—they’re rediscovering their self-worth and strength. Watching them achieve milestones, build savings, and celebrate the smallest victories reinforces our commitment to creating measurable changes. I am often driven to tears of pride and joy with these small accomplishments. Anyone who sits in a class or volunteers with our program leaves feeling that same sense of joy.

One of the most inspiring aspects of this journey is seeing our families give back. We’ve seen parents who were once struggling become mentors to others. They have helped us launch programs in other communities. Their children, who once felt the oppression of poverty, now dream of college and careers. Families that once relied on assistance now volunteer, sharing their stories and encouraging others who are just beginning their journey. This spirit and capacity of paying it forward is exactly what thriving looks like.

Leading this organization has taught me that transformative change requires not only vision and dedication but also empathy and adaptability. We’ve adapted our program over the years, learning from each RISE member’s experience and adjusting to better meet their needs. Today, as I look back, I am incredibly proud, not just of the number of lives touched but of the community we’ve built—a community where families know they have a support system, where resilience is celebrated, and where hope is a shared commodity.

As we move forward, I am more committed than ever to our mission. The journey from surviving to thriving isn’t easy, but it’s possible, and it’s powerful. To every family we’ve served and every person who has supported this mission, thank you for believing in this work. Together, we are creating lasting change, one neighbor at a time.
